Stop and Observe

stop

In a fast moving world that operates on the basis of actions and reactions, is it possible for me to step back and observe?

My automatic reaction to life’s dramas seem to be controlled by a force that I am not directly managing. And then these reactions become the basis of my tomorrow.

In the face of situations let me see if I can apply a brake. To stop and not engage at any level – whether it be my thoughts, words, actions or even feelings.

If I am able to stop then I can become the observer of the scene – Who is doing what and why?

If I can step back even further then I become the observer of the self and my behaviour within the scene. What am I thinking and feeling about the scene and what are the needs and desires which are fuelling that?

Developing the ability to ‘Stop’ will allow me to begin to understand the things that control me from a very deep space within the soul. I begin to reveal myself to myself and in doing so I am able to become free.

The Control Factor

give_and_take

We all want the best for ourselves and as a result we work hard to make things happen. With determination we can achieve anything.

There is however a difference between the virtue of determination and that of needing to have control over things in order to achieve success.

We often face challenges in achieving our goals. The power of determination will allow us to adjust and adapt to challenges whilst keeping the goal in mind.

Control on the other hand will not allow flexibility and thus will breed fear of not achieving. As a result it will give rise to stress, tension and anger. We will try and control things and make things happen in the way they ‘should be’ and thus try and force things in an ‘un-natural’ way.

No matter how much force we use to control people and circumstances, there is never a guarantee of results. And a forced victory, received at the cost of much hurt and stress, is a bitter fruit.

Learn to hold determination and let go of the need to control.

The Forceful or The Powerful

When faced with negative situations in life, the most natural reaction, it seems, is a negative one. It may be in the face of fear that I get angry or in the face of deception I get upset etc.

All negative behaviours and emotions are in fact weaknesses within the human soul. When a weakness fights with another weakness there is no possibility of a positive outcome for either side. Weaknesses are forceful and like a weapon they hurt us.

The ingredient that is required to neutralise the situation, and give the opportunity for benefit, is to use virtues instead of weaknesses. Virtues are subtle, but they are powerful, as opposed to forceful. Their purpose is to empower the self and others.

In face of negative situations, make space enough to allow the self to choose virtues rather than weaknesses.

Choose to empower the self and others.
